With few surprises, techies were underwhelmed with Apple’s iPad 2 announcement, but I’m confident that consumers will be thrilled with the product. Apple already had a massive lead in the consumer tablet market it created, and these “underwhelming” upgrades should keep the company comfortably ahead. Apple has given competitors an opening by sticking to 3G, and it did not further pressure them with a lower entry price point or higher-resolution display. However, Apple has three critical advantages.

1. Brand: When consumers are thinking about tablets, they say they are buying an “iPad,” not a “tablet.” The iPad was already the category and volume leader, and the iPad 2 builds on that. In this respect, Apple actually benefits from the crowd of new tablets hitting the market. If there were only one or two strong competitors, consumers would be able to weigh the pros and cons of each offering, but with dozens and dozens of options hitting the market over the next few months, decision paralysis can set in and many consumers will throw up their hands and make the “safe” choice: the iPad.

2. iTunes: The iPad is still the only tablet on the market with a huge digital marketplace for movies, TV shows, and music. Some competitors are taking steps in this direction (e.g., Samsung’s Hub), but iTunes remains a significant competitive advantage.

3. App Store: If all you want to do is browse the Web and check e-mail, any tablet will probably suffice. However, Apple has an enormous lead in purpose-built apps. The Android ecosystem is strong and app availability should improve significantly over time, but the iPad 2 is considerably more versatile than any of its competitors right now, and it appears unlikely to lose its lead any time in the near future.

So if you are competing with Apple, what should you do? Rather than copying Apple’s products, copy its old advertising tag line and Think Different.

Apple’s brand is focused on creative types (or those who aspire to be), which is why it spends so much effort creating things like GarageBand. Competitors should target IT managers, knowledge workers, outdoorsy people, or some other group and build software and hardware combinations better suited to those use cases. Of course, this will take imagination and the ability to tie hardware, software, and services together to build unique experiences. There are some companies thinking outside the box (HTC and RIM have clearly differentiated products on their roadmaps), but for the vendors who are trying to out-Apple Apple… good luck. Here are some pointers, you’re going to need them:

• Based on Apple’s financials, it is clear that the iPad with WiFi is Apple’s volume product and 3G versions are merely gravy. Why is the competition only targeting the gravy?

• iTunes remains a significant competitive advantage for Apple – I cannot easily explain to novices how to get a movie onto the XOOM. Rivals need an “iTunes” of their own, but having one just achieves parity with Apple, so partnering is an acceptable approach. However, half measures are not enough; digital media stores must include movies (including rentals) and TV shows and music. If multiple partners are used, the tablet vendor still needs to provide a common interface and single account/billing relationship.

• Nintendo has a significant base of game developers targeting the 3DS; if you cannot muster equivalent resources (for gaming, media playback, or some other use), adding 3D to your tablet is just a gimmick.

• Apple’s rivals can compete on 4G, higher-resolution displays, or a lower price. Even speed is a potential differentiator from a technical perspective; NVIDIA has quad-core processors sampling this month, so rivals could build even faster tablets for this holiday season. However, I must still caution vendors that all of these factors are irrelevant if consumers do not want your product.

The major legislative item on the agenda in the Senate this week will be The Small Business Reauthorization Act (S. 493).  Republicans plan to use this bill as a platform to promote critical pieces of legislation through the process of non-germane amendments to the bill.  Here are some vital amendments that will be debated and voted on throughout the week:

  • Senator Mitch McConnell is offering an amendment (S. AMDT 183) to prohibit the EPA from promulgating any regulations on greenhouse gas emissions.  There is perhaps no force that is more destructive to our prosperity, consumer freedom of choice, and job creation than onerous cap and trade schemes.  There are many red state Democrats who are up for reelection in 2012 and will be hard pressed to go on record as supporting policies that are an imprecation to the interests of their states.  Make sure to call Senators Claire McCaskill, Joe Manchin, Ben Nelson, Bill Nelson, and Jon Tester in particular.

  • Senator David Vitter is offering an amendment (S.AMDT. 178) forcing the federal government to sell off unused and underused property.  This is a serious issue.  The federal government owns over half of the land in some western states and has been using it to stifle energy development.  Selling unused federal lands would also serve as a prudent means of generating revenue without raising taxes.

  • Senator Rand Paul is using the SBA bill as a platform to offer his signature budget bill (S.AMDT 199) which would slash $200 billion in spending for fiscal 2011.  Paul’s plan slashes funding by 50% to the Departments of Energy, Education, and HUD.  This amendment represents real limited government and budget austerity and will separate the men among the boys in the ranks of the Republican Conference.

  • Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is forcing a vote (S. AMDT 197) to delay the implementation of ObamaCare until a final resolution is reached in pending lawsuits.  Unlike other bills that are designed to merely ameliorate ObamaCare, this amendment would completely halt it during the ensuing legal battles.

  • Senator Tom Coburn has filed an amendment (S.AMDT.184) to force federal agencies to compile comprehensive lists of all of their programs

Make sure that all of your Republican senators are on record supporting these amendments, especially Rand Paul’s budget proposal.  Also, let’s see which faux moderate Democrats will commit to supporting anyone of these commonsense initiatives.  Needless to say, I didn’t waste time calling my senators; Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin!

Money Making Secrets

A bit of eye candy coming our way from across the pond! This time for director Sion (Strange Circus, Love Exposure, Suicide Club) Sono's strange little slasher flick Cold Fish. Break out your bento box!

For more information (that is, if you can read Japanese), dig on the official Cold Fish website here.

Synopsis

HE’LL MAKE YOU PICK UP THE PIECES

Shamoto runs a small tropical fish shop and leads a boring, but stable life. His second wife, Taeko, does not get along with his daughter, Mitsuko, and this worries him. He also feels somehow unfulfilled and dissatisfied with what his life has become.

One day Mitsuko is caught shoplifting at a department store. There they meet a friendly man named Murata, who helps to settle things between Mitsuko and the store manager. Since Murata also runs a tropical fish shop, Shamoto establishes a bond with him and they become friends; Mitsuko even begins working for Murata and living at his house, to avoid conflicts with her stepmother.

What Shamoto doesn’t know, however, is that Murata hides many dark secrets behind his friendly face. He sells cheap fish to his customers for high prices with his artful lies. If anyone detects his fraud or refuses to go along with his money-making schemes, they’re murdered and their bodies disposed of by Murata and his wife in grisly ways. Shamoto is slowly taken in by Murata’s tactics, and by the time he realizes that Murata is insane, and a serial killer who has made over fifty people disappear, he is powerless to do anything about it. But now Mitsuko is a hostage at Murata’s home, and Shamoto himself has become the killer’s unwilling accomplice!

Meanwhile, the murders, without any trace of the bodies, continue unabated. The police have long suspected Murata and try to get information about him from Shamoto; Murata quickly senses the danger and threatens Shamoto not to report anything to the police.

In the end, the conflict between Shamoto and Murata will result in murder, insanity, and an ordinary man being driven to the edge of the abyss.

I have a 15 year old cousin with autism, whose parents are trying to plan for the future when they're not around to take care of him anymore. My uncle is in his mid 60's, and my aunt is somewhere in her 40's. I'm 24. My cousin will be classified as a disabled adult upon turning 18, and will probably have to be institutionalized at some point.

I received a call from my semi-estranged uncle asking if I'd be willing to administer the cousin's inheritance. I haven't seen these relatives for a few years. Semi-estranged due to family drama (which I'm not directly involved in) over the uncle's treatment of his other child. This mess also means that my uncle's other child is probably out of the running to look after my cousin with autism. I'm willing to consider acting as trustee, but I need a lot more information.

So .... if you have any experience with this sort of thing, I'd love to hear from you. I'm wondering about:

1) What kind of support does the US give to disabled adults? If it matters, cousin lives in TX. I'm still in graduate school, with no idea where I'll settle. Will my cousin be provided with somewhere safe to live, or is he out on the street as soon as my uncle's money runs out? Or does it make sense for the money to run out sooner, so government help kicks in (as seems to be the case for some instances of elder care)?

2) Is there any way for me to wind up on the hook for my cousin's care? I have no intention of agreeing to this if I will wind up legally responsible for supporting my cousin out of my own earnings. I also have no intention of ever being a physical caretaker.

3) My uncle pitched this as my only job being to control the investments and cut checks when necessary. What other duties am I likely to wind up with? What types of decisions will I have to be making, and what degree of involvement with my cousin's day-to-day life will be required?

4) Do professionals exist who do this for a fee, or does it always just fall onto family?

5) What about the other cousin? What are the legal ramifications of leaving an unequal inheritance?

6) What other questions do I need to be asking my uncle? I will have no problem asking awkward questions, or saying no to this request.

Before I sign onto anything, I'll definitely be consulting a lawyer, but that's a way into the future. I have on the order of a year to make this decision.

What to Expect When Getting a Roofing Contractor

When it comes time to correct or even replace your homes roof, it's really a daunting job to locate somebody that is qualified for the job. There are lots of roofing companies out there, but the types who'll do a congrats for a sensible cost are not frequently easy to find. If you are in the marketplace for the service provider, use the ideas beneath for interviewing as well as hiring the right one.

Job interview as well as Consultation

Now this is what I call a job interview by Lylith ॐ

Most roofers offer totally free consultation services. This is particularly important, since it provides them an opportunity to assess what your roof requirements, and it gives you a chance to evaluate them. As with all of businesses, trust your instincts about the individuals you let upward on your roofing. No matter how good a contractor's status or even recommendation, he or she ought to start by showing a person with a business greeting card. If a service provider arrives searching as well as speaking within an unprofessional manner, chances are that the job he is going to do may also be unprofessional. This isn't to say that you should anticipate contractors to reach in suits. They is going to be hiking on your roof, so the majority of is going to be dressed in denim jeans as well as function footwear or even sneakers. If the service provider appears to be more interested in talking upon his cell phone during your homes roof than he's in evaluating your roof's needs, which may be an additional indication that he is not really the main one to do the job. For your lawful safety, make sure that the actual contractor has sufficient legal responsibility insurance coverage.

Roof Evaluation

Roof by aixcracker

Anticipate the service provider is going to be going up in your roof. Actually, any contractor who not need to increase on your roofing to judge the issue ought to be instantly reduced. Those who are seriously interested in their own work will either create a sketching of your roof's surface and tag problem areas onto it as they undergo their own evaluation, or they'll take photos or even video of the surface while they're up there. This is a very essential action, because it allows you to see just what the problems are as well as know how they will be set.

Estimate

FIX the roof by These Days in French Life

The next phase would be the written estimate. The service provider will require out his loan calculator and are available up with a written estimate. Some companies goes to their own vehicle or van and write up the actual suggestion, while some will crunch the amounts to do the job prior to you. Once you're given the proposal, ensure that you understand exactly which items will be used, how long the job will require and when there are any extra or hidden costs that could occur during the repair of the roofing. The contractor should be able to solution all of these concerns with ease as well as forewarn a person associated with a extra expenses that might be incurred if the roof's integrity be broken within.

Once you have obtained a few created estimations from roofing companies, evaluate what every company or contractor is willing to provide for that cost. Do not always low cost the greatest bid, because occasionally the greatest bet will in reality function as the service provider who the task correctly. Also, be wary of bids that are significantly less than other people. They might be utilizing substandard products or be unethical about the chance of concealed expenses. Above all, trust your intuition and opt for the actual service provider who enables you to feel quite comfortable regarding handing more than your hard earned money.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

AFP

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

Wikileaks and the Uyghurs

by holly on Dec Twenty, 2010
Henryk Szadziewski, Supervisor, Uyghur Human Rights Project

Whether it were actually in doubt, info acquired by the whistleblower website, Wikileaks, has verified Chinese federal government worries more than it's ongoing charge of the region it calls Xinjiang, also is referred to as Eastern Turkestan. The actual leaked out cables through U.S. diplomats show the actual extent to which Chinese language government bodies make an effort to convince governments globally to consider it's position upon issues affecting Uyghurs. The actual wires also show the actual United States' issues and views concerning the on going repressive measures in the region.

uyghur by sarvaz

Most lighting associated with Chinese language federal government stress would be the cables directed in order to Chinese language anger, or the specter of Chinese ire, over the release of Uyghur detainees within Guantánamo to third countries. A December 29, 08 cable relates how Chinese language Assistant International Minister Liu Jieyi fulfilled using the Ough.S. Ambassador in order to The far east in order to tone of voice Beijing's strong competitors associated with launch to any kind of nation apart from The far east, which if the U.Utes. do indeed accede to this request it would "avoid harm to bilateral relations and also to cooperation ‘in essential areas'". Furthermore, a Feb 2009 cable describes how the Chinese language Ambassador in order to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded the actual feasible discharge of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfriendly act toward us" along with a "slap in the face". That the U.S. federal government was company within not really liberating the actual detainees to The far east demonstrates the extent from the politicized character from the Chinese language judicial system. Genuine issues over terrorism are easy to understand, but in the actual U.S. government's view the detainees might probably face do-it-yourself torture as well as execution if they returned in order to The far east

Chinese federal government pressure regarding the actual Uyghur Guantánamo detainees wasn't just applied to the actual Ough.S. government, but additionally to Brand new Zealand and a number of European governments that were thinking about resettlement. Albania, Indonesia as well as Finland, as well as European Union fellow member states all appear to have borne the brunt associated with Chinese government unhappiness. In the case of Indonesia, that was at first prepared to think about two Uyghurs on purely relief reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo cases had been much less preferable to additional detainees because of the negative effects taking Uyghurs would have upon relations along with The far east. The May 8, 2009 cable television relates how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer documented that Germany had informed The far east of the U.S. ask for to simply accept some Uighur detainees held at Guantánamo coupled with already been subsequently cautioned by The far east of ‘a large load on bilateral relations' if Germany had been to simply accept any detainees".

The actual diplomatic cables also discuss the actual unrest in Urumchi, the actual local capital, in This summer 2009. The This summer Thirteen, 2009 cable television talking about mass occurrences in China states:

"Ethnic riots like those in Xinjiang This summer 5-7 and in Tibet within March associated with 08 differ substantially in source as well as character from bulk occurrences, XXXXXXXXXXXX stressed in order to PolOff [Political Officer] on XXXXXXXXXXXX. Each existing severe trouble for the actual Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX stated, however the Celebration management would not wait to spread out fireplace on Uighurs or even Tibetans if they deemed this essential to recover purchase. Bulk occurrences pose another type of risk, he said, since the leadership is ‘afraid' to fire on Han rioters for anxiety about sparking massive public outrage that would change from the Party."

This is a relaxing opinion, especially when one views the evidence offered in two reports launched this season through the Uyghur Individual Rights Task (UHRP) and Amnesty International that fine detail eyewitness accounts from the utilization of deadly live fireplace towards Uyghur protestors within July 2009. In addition, the declaration which fireplace would not be deployed towards Han Chinese language protestors has resonances for the different strategy taken through Chinese language protection causes in Urumchi to Han Chinese direct orders within Sept '09. Throughout those direct orders, then Celebration Assistant, Wang Lequan, tackled protesters, that had demanded that he inform them about federal government reactions in order to protection concerns. An identical request to meet with the Celebration Assistant through Uyghur protesters in July was not met.

The actual broader consequences from the unrest additionally noticed a brief discussion about the effect it might have upon Iran-China relations, and on relations along with Sydney after Globe Uyghur Our elected representatives President, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, talked in the Nationwide Press Membership in Canberra in July 2009. Within the latter case, the Chinese federal government "privately warn[ed] a significant Australian bank that sponsors the nation's Push Membership to make use of it's influence to bar a Kadeer talk there".

The United States' concerns about the situation within the Uyghur area also come through in the cables. In a discussion upon policy direction within Tibet, Ough.Utes. authorities clarify that it will be not possible with regard to Chinese leaders to consider the softer line "if they look like they are doing so under international pressure". The cable out dated April 16, 2008, one month following the outbreak of unrest within Tibetan areas, additionally relayed the observation "that domestic stability remains the leadership's top priority above all else, meaning there'll ‘almost surely' end up being no rest from the present difficult collection on Tibet or perhaps in locations such as Xinjiang." The info included in the cable television additionally sheds gentle about the severe sensitivity that the Chinese federal government views territorial ethics, and also the feasible spill over associated with unrest from Tibet.

The prospect of solutions to tensions in Tibet and Xinjiang arising from municipal society are discussed inside a February Twenty-four, 08 cable television. Whilst suggesting which China's financial achievement increases it's potential to deal with democratic change, the actual cable television also discusses exactly how Chinese language leaders see the usefulness associated with "a limited expansion associated with municipal society, including enhancements in the rule of law along with a more powerful role for approved religions, NGOs, non profit organizations and other actors in areas that contribute to social balance and don't problem Communist Party rule." This can be a notable change in thinking, which has observed U.S. authorities promote the notion that Chinese financial improvement, as well as economic relationships with China will bring about a progressively democratic culture; however, much more belief seems to be placed in the grassroots motion compared to one which begins from the best quantity of a Chinese government. Nevertheless, the actual cable proves that "[i]n areas for example Tibet and Xinjiang, driving a car associated with separatism leads to tighter limitations on the development of municipal culture." This method can be regarded as counter-productive by the official, who shows that the Ough.Utes. federal government "should still express...serious issues more than Beijing's individual rights record and appeal to China's growing consciousness which higher respect for human privileges, religious independence and the guideline of regulation assists to promote the improvement as well as social stability that China looks for as well as to improve China's worldwide image." This type of technique would consider substantial diplomatic skills thinking about "China's weird fear that the Usa secretly promotes routine alter as well as ‘separatists' in Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang".

The actual cables provide understanding of the every day business of diplomacy that is rarely owned by everyone, and it is interesting to note the amount of function done nowadays on Uyghur issues. The significance of the actual role of the United States like a keep track of associated with Uyghur individual privileges conditions within private discussions is created obvious, and contrasts with its sensible open public position. Employees from the Uyghur Human Privileges Task is well aware of the pressure the Chinese government exerts upon Uyghur activists; nevertheless, the details associated with Chinese language federal government stress upon it's counterparts is actually illustrative of the degree that Chinese authorities make an effort to control contradictory narratives. With more facts in the future through Wikileaks, concerns over Uyghurs might not get the actual head lines, but the wires have shed brand new gentle on the documentation of human privileges conditions within the Uyghur region.

uyghur by sarvaz

If it had been actually uncertain, information obtained by the whistleblower web site, Wikileaks, has confirmed Chinese government worries over its ongoing charge of the region this calls Xinjiang, also is known as Eastern Turkestan. The actual leaked out wires from U.S. diplomats show the actual degree that Chinese language government bodies make an effort to convince government authorities globally to adopt it's stance on problems affecting Uyghurs. The actual wires additionally display the actual U . s . States' concerns as well as sights concerning the on going repressive measures in the area.

Most illuminating of Chinese federal government pressure are the cables pointing in order to Chinese frustration, or the specter associated with Chinese language ire, within the discharge of Uyghur detainees in Guantánamo to third countries. The Dec Twenty nine, 2008 cable relates how Chinese Assistant Foreign Reverend Liu Jieyi fulfilled using the U.Utes. Ambassador in order to The far east in order to voice Beijing's powerful competitors of launch in order to any kind of country other than China, which if the Ough.S. do certainly accede to this request it might "avoid injury to bilateral relationships and to cooperation ‘in important areas'". In addition, the Feb 2009 cable television explains how the Chinese language Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded as the feasible release of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfavorable behave toward us" and a "slap in the face". That the Ough.S. government stood company in not liberating the detainees in order to China illustrates the extent from the politicized character of the Chinese language judicial program. Legitimate issues over terrorism tend to be understandable, however in the Ough.S. government's observe the detainees might probably encounter do-it-yourself torture and execution when they came back to China

Chinese language federal government stress in regard to the actual Uyghur Guantánamo detainees wasn't only applied to the Ough.Utes. federal government, but additionally in order to Brand new Zealand and a number of European governments that were thinking about resettlement. Albania, Germany as well as Finland, in addition to European Union member says just about all appear to have borne the impact associated with Chinese language government disappointment. In the case of Germany, that was at first prepared to consider two Uyghurs on purely humanitarian reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo cases were less preferable to other detainees because of the negative effects accepting Uyghurs might have upon relations along with The far east. The May 8, 2009 cable television applies exactly how "German Ambassador Michael Schaefer documented that Germany had informed The far east from the U.Utes. ask for to accept a few Uighur detainees kept from Guantánamo coupled with been subsequently cautioned by China of ‘a large load on bilateral relations' in the event that Indonesia were to accept any detainees".

The actual diplomatic wires also discuss the actual unrest in Urumchi, the regional capital, within July '09. A July 13, '09 cable discussing bulk occurrences within The far east says:

"Ethnic riots like those in Xinjiang This summer 5-7 as well as in Tibet within March of 08 vary substantially within source and nature from mass incidents, XXXXXXXXXXXX stressed in order to PolOff [Political Officer] upon XXXXXXXXXXXX. Both present severe problems for the actual Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX stated, but the Celebration management wouldn't wait to open fire on Uighurs or even Tibetans when they deemed it necessary to restore order. Mass incidents present a different kind of threat, he explained, since the leadership is actually ‘afraid' to fire on Han rioters with regard to anxiety about causing massive public outrage that will turn against the Party."

This can be a relaxing viewpoint, particularly when 1 considers evidence presented in two reviews released this year by the Uyghur Individual Privileges Task (UHRP) as well as Amnesty Worldwide which detail eyewitness accounts from the utilization of lethal reside fireplace towards Uyghur protestors in July 2009. Additionally, the declaration that fire would not be used against Han Chinese protestors offers resonances for the various approach used through Chinese language protection causes within Urumchi to Han Chinese direct orders within September 2009. Throughout those direct orders, after that Celebration Secretary, Wang Lequan, tackled demonstrators, that had required that he let them know about federal government responses in order to protection concerns. A similar ask for to meet with the Party Secretary by Uyghur demonstrators within July wasn't fulfilled.

The broader repercussions from the unrest also noticed a short dialogue on the effect it would possess on Iran-China relations, and on relationships along with Australia following Globe Uyghur Congress Leader, Microsoft. Rebiya Kadeer, talked in the National Press Membership in Canberra in August '09. In the second option situation, the Chinese government "privately warn[ed] a major Aussie bank that vendors the National Push Club to make use of it's influence to block a Kadeer speech there".

The United States' concerns about the situation within the Uyghur region also come via within the cables. Inside a discussion on plan path within Tibet, Ough.Utes. authorities clarify that it'll be not possible for Chinese leaders to consider the much softer collection "if they appear like doing so under international pressure". The cable out dated 04 Sixteen, 2008, 30 days after the episode of unrest within Tibetan areas, also relayed the actual observation "that domestic balance continues to be leadership's main concern most of all, meaning there will ‘almost surely' end up being absolutely no rest of the current difficult line on Tibet or perhaps in places such as Xinjiang." The info included in the cable also storage sheds light on the extreme sensitivity that the Chinese federal government views territorial ethics, and the feasible spill over of unrest from Tibet.

The chance associated with solutions to tensions in Tibet and Xinjiang as a result of civil society tend to be debated in a February Twenty-four, 08 cable. While recommending that China's financial achievement increases its resistance to democratic change, the actual cable television also talks about how Chinese frontrunners begin to see the usefulness associated with "a restricted growth of civil culture, including improvements within the guideline of regulation and a more powerful part with regard to approved beliefs, NGOs, charities along with other actors in areas which bring about sociable balance and don't problem Communist Celebration guideline." This is a notable alternation in considering, which has seen U.S. officials promote the notion which Chinese financial improvement, as well as economic relations with China brings in regards to a steadily democratic society; nevertheless, more belief seems to be placed in the grassroots movement compared to one which starts in the best quantity of a Chinese language federal government. Nonetheless, the actual cable television proves that "[i]n areas such as Tibet and Xinjiang, the fear associated with separatism leads to tight limitations about the development of municipal culture." This method can be regarded as counter-productive through the official, that suggests that the actual Ough.S. federal government "should continue to express...serious concerns over Beijing's individual rights report as well as attract China's growing awareness which higher regard for individual rights, religious freedom and also the guideline associated with law assists to advertise the very improvement as well as social balance that The far east looks for as well as to enhance China's worldwide image." Such a strategy would consider substantial diplomatic skills considering "China's weird concern the Usa privately encourages regime change as well as ‘separatists' within Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang".

The actual wires offer understanding of the daily company associated with diplomacy that's rarely owned by everyone, which is interesting to note the quantity of work done nowadays upon Uyghur problems. The importance of the part of the us as a monitor of Uyghur individual privileges problems in private discussions is made obvious, and contrasts using its sensible open public stance. Employees from the Uyghur Human Rights Project is actually well aware of the pressure china federal government puts on Uyghur activists; still, the facts of Chinese language federal government stress upon it's counterparts is actually illustrative of the diploma which Chinese language officials make an effort to suppress contrary stories. With increased facts in the future through Wikileaks, concerns more than Uyghurs may not get the headlines, but the wires have get rid of new gentle about the paperwork associated with individual privileges problems in the Uyghur area.

Little about the Uyghurs

In the center of the desert landscapes of Taklamakan, in the north-western part of China, the land of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is a least populated province while it covers close to a sixth from the country's territory. Having resisted while in centuries the Han Chinese control, Xinjiang, or Old East Turkestan, fell under the Chinese Han domination in 1949. From then, its population is mostly Uyghurs and Turkish - speaking System.

Muslim mainly, the Uyghur people have a solid religious identification which, in specific, permitted them to keep a solid difference towards the Chinese enemy. Certainly, the Uyghur Empire of Mongolia knew a great civilization, until its absorption by the Mongolian Empire in the XIIIth century.

While in their own history, the Uyghur People successively taken on Shamanism, Manicheism, Buddhism and the Nestorianism before lastly converting to Islam when the Arab conquerors beat the Chinese in year 751 BC., as a result beginning the way to the Islamization of the whole Central Asia.

Under the influence of the beliefs which they taken, Uyghur People used successively, and sometimes in a competing way, a large number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own graphic system.

The arrival of Islam was a great modification since it was accompanied by the absorption of the Uyghur areas in the immense Turkic and Islamic Kingdom. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan progressively replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used nowadays.

If their writing, their language and their religion mark a real big difference with the tradition of Chinese Han, the Uyghurs also differ from their aspect, so characteristic of Central Asia's people. A shiny skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features going out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek roots of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has included the proper identity of these remote people, though they represent only eight million inhabitants - a little for this specific huge land. So, Uyghur people are now part of the 56 racial minority groups having been recognized in an official way by the People's Republic of China.

This law will allow them a few rights in a land exactly where their difference is very often repressed. Therefore, Uyghur families escape the "single child policy" and their language is accepted as the second official language in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The integration of the Uyghurs and their culture in China, however, looks pretty illusory. The presence of all natural resources in Xinjiang, and its closeness with nations recognized as sensitive, highly urged the government to accelerate the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the greater responsibility job opportunities.

In response to this true will to assimilate the Uyghurs into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Saying more freedom, but primarily the acceptance of their true identity, this movement was severely repressed by the power authorities in location Xinjiang.

The situations of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghur peoples population continues today to proudly keep their identification and their ethnic heritage , despite the fact that they become a minority on their own land.

To get more detailed information and facts about the Uyghurs, you can visit a Uyghur website called Uyghur News at http://www.uyghurnews.com

personal finance money management

In my fantasy life, I’m an organized guy. In the real world, that’s just not the case. I do my best to stay on top of things — I make lists, use a calendar, ask Kris for help — but there always seems to be something slipping through the cracks.

Before we left for Africa, for example, I hid my wallet. I always do this when we go on a long trip. (I don’t use my wallet when I travel.) And every time, I have trouble finding it when I get home. You’d think I’d develop a system — but no.

I’m not the only one with problems like this. Sure, there are folks out there like Kris and her sister — people who never let anything fall through the cracks — but they’re few and far between. Most of us need to develop systems to help our lives run smoothly.

Developing systems that work

I’ve read dozens of books on time management, coping with clutter, and getting things done. But I’ve never found a magic cure-all for disorganization. The trouble is, as with personal finance, there’s no one right answer. Each of us is different. We have different strengths, different weakness, and different aims in life. There’s no one system that’s going to work for every person.

For years, my motto at Get Rich Slowly has been do what works for you. I don’t mean by this that one choice is as good as another. There are best practices for paying off debt, saving for retirement, and buying a used car. What I mean is that there’s no one system that works for everyone. The debt snowball helped me get out of debt, but it may have you treading water.

I’ve found that the key to developing systems that work for me is to take bits and pieces from other people’s ideas, and to remix them in ways that fit my goals and strengths. This is true for all aspects of my life, including fitness, finance, writing, travel, and more.

I’ve noticed, though, that there are three elements that seem to be part of every successful system in my life: routine, automation, and simplicity.

The Power of Routine

By far the most important key to my success is establishing routines. Why have I managed to lose so much weight in the past year? Because I made it a habit to get up at 5:30 every morning so that I could be at the gym by 6:30. How did I manage to buy my Mini? I made saving a routine.

Valuable financial habits or routines include:

  • Paying yourself first

  • Tracking your spending

  • Checking your receipts

  • Controlling impulse spending with the 30-day rule

When something becomes routine, it becomes a natural part of your life. It’s not something you have to force yourself to do. It’s almost automatic, which makes it easier to do the right thing instead of letting your emotions get the better of you.

I’ve also had great success by foisting my routines onto the poor, unsuspecting computers around me. Automation helps my systems run smoothly.

The Power of Automation

When I was younger, I had a heck of a time remembering to pay my bills on time. Even when I had a set routine — for years, I paid bills on the first Saturday of every month — I’d sometimes forget to follow it. So, whenever I find a way to automate some part of my life, I do it.

Removing me from the equation just makes thing run so much more smoothly. That’s why I’ve spent the past several years developing a paperless personal-finance system, which includes:

  • Automatic bill payments. All of my regular bills are automatically paid electronically.

  • Automatic saving. Every month, I have money automatically transferred to my savings accounts. (Remember, I keep multiple savings accounts to pursue different goals.)

  • Automatic investing. Well, I don’t actually do this now — I’m making manual investments at the end of every tax year — but for a long time, my retirement accounts automatically pulled from my paycheck and/or checking account.

Founded in 2009 by Amanda Steinberg, DailyWorth is a daily email newsletter that includes information on financial literacy and money management skewed towards a female audience. DailyWorth’s subjects range from how to organize your finances to tax tips to saving advice. And DailyWorth has an impressive editorial staff to create content. With 55,000 subscribers, the newsletter currently makes money via advertising and already has sponsorships in place with a number of financial institutions including ING and H&R Block. And DailyWorth plans to hold sponsored educational events as an additional revenue channel. The new funding will be used to expand audience reach with customized email newsletters; develop the startup’s website; add video content and to host sponsored events.

DailyWorth is similar in many ways to LearnVest, a personal finance community for women. But DailyWorth is committed to the email newsletter model (which are making a comeback). And there’s definitely room for many personal finance sites oriented towards women.

The SEC took a step forward today to bring its rule book in compliance with the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill. Some financial sectors got off easier than others. Instead of relying on the credit-rating agencies who played a role in that little sub-prime kerfuffle you may remember, money-market funds will now rely on the "judgment" of the funds and the funds' board of directors to assess risk. Freewheeling finance, wheeeee! Large brokers and investment advisers, including hedge funds, didn't fare quite as well. On a 3-to-2 vote, The Wall Street Journal reports that SEC, like the FDIC, approved restrictions on bonuses for that sector from executives down on to lower-level employees.

Wednesday's proposal would require brokers and advisers with more than $1 billion in assets to disclose the bonus arrangements of their executives, directors and lower-level employees to the SEC annually. Bonus arrangements deemed by regulators to encourage inappropriate risks or that could cause financial loss would be banned. As with the FDIC plan, the SEC proposal would require firms with at least $50 billion in assets to hold half of the bonuses of top executives and others for three years or longer.

Transparency and considering about the consequences of high-risk investments? It's like they don't even understand Wall Street at all.
